Discover the Magic of Vietnam & Cambodia: A Mekong River Cruise Adventure

Southeast Asia has always been on my personal travel bucket list, and I’m particularly excited about this upcoming Mekong River Cruise. I’ve got assistants based in the Philippines, which is just a short hop away from Vietnam, and hearing their stories about life and culture in the region has only fueled my wanderlust. So, if you’re anything like me—curious about new places and eager for adventure—you’re going to love this trip!

Let’s dive into the full itinerary and the incredible experiences that await you, from the breathtaking natural landscapes to the deep history and delicious food.

The Journey: From Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

Your journey starts in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, where French-colonial charm meets vibrant street life. After two nights soaking in the culture, we’ll set sail on an overnight cruise in the stunning Ha Long Bay. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its emerald waters and limestone islands. Next up: Siem Reap, Cambodia’s gateway to the magnificent Angkor Wat temples, where ancient history comes alive. From there, we embark on a luxury river cruise along the Mekong, ending with two nights in the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh City.

Here’s how your trip will unfold:

On your 2 Nights in Hanoi, Explore historic temples, try local street food, and ride a cyclo around the Old Quarter’s winding streets. Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the chaotic charm of this city.

1. Keep in mind that when visiting temples like the Temple of Literature or One Pillar Pagoda, dress modestly—cover your shoulders and knees out of respect for local customs. Try local street food.

2. Don’t miss Hanoi’s legendary street food scene. Try pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) from a local vendor or grab a banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) from a street cart. The stalls that locals flock to are usually the safest bet.

3. A cyclo ride (pedal-powered taxi) is a must-do and a great way to explore without exhausting yourself. This is included in your Hanoi itinerary, so you’ll have the chance to sit back and take in the sights as you’re pedaled through the bustling streets. Just remember to agree on a price before hopping in for any additional rides you may take on your own!

A Night in Ha Long Bay: Ha Long Bay is postcard-perfect and even better in person. Picture yourself cruising on calm waters surrounded by towering limestone islands, each more majestic than the last.

1. Pack Smart. Bring a lightweight jacket for the evening; it can get chilly on the water. Comfortable shoes with good grip are a must if you’re planning on exploring any caves.

2. If you’re feeling adventurous, kayaking around the bay is an unforgettable way to experience the towering limestone karsts up close. Be prepared to get a little wet!

3. Don’t over-schedule yourself. Ha Long Bay is about the serene experience, so make time to sit on deck with a cup of tea and just soak in the views.

3 Nights in Siem Reap: Cambodia’s cultural heart, home to the world-famous Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm temples. It’s a blend of spirituality, history, and beauty. Siem Reap is a treasure trove of ancient history, and with three nights here, you’ll have ample time to explore.

1. To beat the crowds and the heat, visit Angkor Wat at sunrise. It’s cooler in the morning, and you’ll get to witness the temple bathed in golden light. Don’t forget water and a hat for the midday sun!

2. While Angkor Wat is the star, don’t miss the other nearby temples like Bayon (with its giant stone faces) and Ta Prohm, where trees intertwine with the temple ruins.

3. In the evening, explore the lively Angkor Night Market for local crafts, street food, and traditional Apsara dance performances. Perfect for souvenir shopping or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

Once you aboard the Mekong River Cruise, it’s smooth sailing through the Mekong Delta, with stops at charming villages and lively floating markets. You’ll get a real feel for life along the river.

1. Get up early to visit the famous floating markets where locals sell everything from fruit to handicrafts from their boats. It’s a sensory experience you won’t want to miss!

2. Bring small gifts like pens or notebooks for local children in the villages; it’s a simple way to give back and connect with the communities you visit.

3. While there’s plenty to explore at each stop, don’t forget to take advantage of the relaxing moments on board. This cruise is about balance, so indulge in a spa treatment or just enjoy the view from the deck.

A couple of nights in Ho Chi Minh City: The energy here is electric! Spend your days wandering through the markets, visiting war museums, and indulging in Vietnamese coffee culture.

1. The city is famous for its swarms of motorbikes. Crossing the street may seem daunting, but the trick is to walk at a steady pace—locals will weave around you.

2. Don’t miss the War Remnants Museum for a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s history. It’s heavy but essential if you want to learn about the Vietnam War from a local perspective.

3. Vietnamese coffee is strong and sweetened with condensed milk, but you should also try egg coffee—a local favorite! Head to a rooftop café for incredible views of the city while sipping your brew.

Experience the Culture: What You’ll Learn and Love

This cruise offers much more than just sightseeing; it’s an immersion into the rich cultures of   Vietnam and Cambodia. From bustling cities to tranquil rural life, you’ll get a real sense of how these countries blend ancient traditions with modern living.

In Vietnam, the warmth of the people will welcome you immediately. Whether you’re chatting with vendors in local markets or admiring the tranquil rice paddies, it’s impossible not to appreciate the resilience and vibrancy of Vietnamese culture. And for history lovers, Vietnam’s deep ties to both the French colonial era and the Vietnam War offer plenty to explore.

In Cambodia, the Khmer Empire comes to life. Wandering through the temples of Angkor, you’ll feel the grandeur of a civilization that was once one of the most powerful in the world. There’s also a deeply spiritual side to Cambodia that you’ll experience firsthand when you visit pagodas or see monks going about their daily routines.

Food: A Delicious Highlight of Your Journey

  • Vietnam: Get ready to slurp some authentic pho  , Vietnam’s iconic noodle soup. This dish is light but flavorful, with a broth that’s been simmering for hours. Don’t miss out on the famous   banh mi   either—a crusty baguette filled with savory meats, fresh herbs, and tangy pickled vegetables. It’s the perfect grab-and-go snack!
  • Cambodia: You’ll want to try amok  , a traditional Cambodian dish made with coconut milk, curry, and fish or chicken. It’s creamy, fragrant, and served in a banana leaf for that extra local touch.
  • Mekong Delicacies: Along the Mekong, you’ll get the chance to taste local specialties like fresh river fish and tropical fruits you may have never heard of. Have you ever tried   rambutan   or   mangosteen? This is your chance!

Every meal is an opportunity to learn something new about these cultures, whether it’s the way food is prepared, the stories behind each dish, or simply savoring the unique flavors of the region.

This isn’t just a cruise—it’s a journey filled with one-of-a-kind experiences that will stick with you long after you’ve returned home.

  • Floating Markets: One of the highlights of the Mekong is the floating markets, where local vendors sell fruits, vegetables, and handmade goods from boats. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world.
  • Temple Visits: The temples of   Angkor Wat   and   Bayon   are just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll get to see the spiritual side of Cambodia and Vietnam, including hidden pagodas and local Buddhist traditions.
  • Cycling Through Villages: For a more active adventure, you can hop on a bike and ride through peaceful villages, getting a firsthand look at everyday life along the Mekong.
  • Local Artisan Visits: While in Oknhatey (Silk Island), you’ll visit local artisans who preserve Cambodia’s traditional silk-weaving techniques.
